Mohammed Jazara's Science Notebook
a Trip Down Shark River
Activity 1
What are some producers, consumers, and decomposers that live in the Florida Everglades? Producers are algae, sawgrass, and phytoplankton. The consumers are American Alliagators and Bull Sharks. The Decomposers are the fungi and bacteria and worms.
What do the consumers listed eat? Usually anything the comes near or in the water. For example both eat turtles becuase they have teeth strong enough to break their shells. Also they eat fish, birds, mamals and reptiles.
List the biotic and abiotic factors that you think will influence where the scientists will find bull sharks in the Everglades:
Abiotic: Weather, location, altitude and season. I think this will influence where the Scientists will find bull sharks because they usually attack on warm, shallow places!
Activity 2
Do you think salinity is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not? Yes I do because, as shown in the graph, the higher the silinity the higher population of sharks.
Do you think temperature is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not?
No, Bull Sharks can appear in any temperature basically all tempretures. This is not an abiotic factor.
Do you think dissolved oxygen content is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not?
Yes, I think so because the higher the content of dissolved oxygen is, the higher rate of bull sharks.
Activity 3
Why do you think baby bull sharks live in the river and not in the ocean like other sharks do?
I think that baby bull sharks live in the river and not in the ocean like other shakrs because adaptation would be easier with silinity and disolved oxygen.
Activity 4:
Are most bull sharks found where they can get the most food? Are fish an important biotic factor for bull sharks? Explain your answers.
Yes, fish are an important biotic factor because usually that is what sharks eat. Also without fish, the food web or food chain would break.
Activity 5:
Look at your far graph in Activity 4 to see where the bull sharks were caught at these same three sites. Do you think predators are an important biotic factor for bull sharks? Explain your answer. Why do you think some bull sharks swim down to the mouth of the river?
